Music Teachers! Its Time to Think like an Entrepreneur!

When one hears the job title \”Piano Teacher,\” the initial reaction is often to envision an elderly teacher in horn-rims offering musical instruction to a handful of unwilling young learners as a side business or hobby. In reality, thousands of private piano teachers nationwide use their extensive music education to create a successful full-time career from home or studios.

Noreen Wenejn, a 25-year veteran of the piano instruction profession and current President of the California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT), decided tp o take action. Having spent the last two decades of her successful career recognizing the importance of creating a nurturing environment for music students, she decided to write a book that shared her wisdom and experience. Her new book shares her tried-and-true business tactics with other music teachers committed to establishing a successful music studio with longevity.

\

In her new book, Two-Year Waitlist: An Entrepreneurial Guide for Music Teachers, Wenjen shares her tried-and-true method of using marketing, technology, and business know-how to grow a two-year waitlist for a successful independent music studio. From identifying the value of a music teacher and connecting with students to taxes, fees, and running a music school like a business, she shares knowledge and experience to educate other professional music teachers on creating an empire that will have students lining up for their expertise.

I\’ve met so many experienced music teachers who struggled financially because they were not able to fill their private studios with enough students or maintain a steady income throughout the year,\” Wenjen shared. \”I wrote Two-Year Waitlist: An Entrepreneurial Guide for Music Teachers to share my marketing knowledge and experience in filling my piano studios and having a two-year waitlist. I hope that this book helps private music teachers of all genres and locations to fill their studios and gain the financial stability and success they deserve.\”

Wenjen went on to share that a full and successful studio with a two-year waitlist draws students with a high level of commitment. \”Students tend to stay with the same teacher for many years, which builds camaraderie and pride between them. This camaraderie breeds success for the students, and their teachers and parents need to be part of this journey as well.\”

The beginning of a parent’s journey into music education is often a spontaneous reaction to their child’s musical curiosity. Parents may not realize that the person they choose to be their child’s music teacher could turn out to have a profound influence on their child’s life.

Professional music teachers, along with teachers in general, are some of the most selfless individuals that I know. Our life’s mission is to educate others and share our music through teaching and performing.

Noreen Wenjen Bio

\Noreen Wenjen displayed a love of music and an interest in business and teaching at an early age.  She began performing in piano competitions at age five and talked her playdates out of playing with Barbies and into playing “office” and “school” instead. She performed competitively for twenty years and received top prizes in international piano competitions.  Her family tree of piano teachers can be traced back to Beethoven Liszt, Bach, and Chopin.  Her piano teachers include Joanna Hodges, Peter Yazbeck, Dr. Stewart Gordon, Nancy Rohr, and Jim McCormick.

A self-proclaimed “accidental piano teacher,” she entered college with plans of studying business and graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Currently, Wenjen is the President of the California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT), is the MTNA Chair for China certification, is the Chair for the MTNA State Presidents’ Advisory Council, and serves on the Editorial Committee member for their national magazine. She also has created a wildly successful in-person and online piano lesson business from her studios in California that has students lining up for her expertise. When not engaged in music, she can be found playing tennis, cooking up a storm, or surfing with her husband and two children.

In Praise of Two-Year Waitlist
