We connect families and children to nature, wonder, and the magic of being through beautiful books

Kidlit for Native American Heritage Month: The Otter, the Spotted Frog and the Great Flood

November 8, 2020 by Valarie Leave a Comment

This month I am revisiting some of my favorite family reads surrounding Native American Heritage Month. Many of these books were published a handful of years ago, but as such high quality, they deserve to remain on parents, educators, caregivers, and librarians radar.

One such book is a Creek Indian tale called, The Otter, the Spotted Frog and the Great Flood by Gerald Hausman and beautifully illustrated by Ramon Shiloh.

The Otter, the Spotted Frog and the Great Flood

In this story, the spotted frog announces to the world that a great flood is coming which will destroy all of their homes. All of the animals ignore the spotted frog’s warning, except an otter named Listener.

Ridiculed by all the other animals, Listener heeds Spotted Frog’s warnings and begins to build a raft to try and survive the coming flood.

As the story progresses and Listener survives the flood, he learns via a mosquito and a fish about his future wife who becomes “First Woman.”

Listener the Otter, and First Woman the mosquito turned to fish, both become the first two-legged beings to walk on earth.

From that time on, the earth was good to them and they always listened to Spotted Frog, who everyone knew was the frog who saved the world by singing.

Our family and friends alike have greatly loved this book. First, because the story is told brilliantly by Gerald Hausman. It uses simple and concise language while sharing the story in a simple manner. Also part of this storytelling adventure is the exquisite paintings and illustrations of Ramon Shiloh. There is a nice even flow between story and text forming a single cohesive unit of storytelling magic.

Happy Reading!

Gorgeous descriptions of New Orleans paired with a brilliant take on vampire lore, all written with a truly authentic teen voice add up to one thing: Hannah Rials’s writing is breathing new life into the paranormal YA world.

I always suspected that certain picture books give dragons an undeserved bad rap. This delightful picture book clears up dangerous and misleading misconceptions about dragons. Dragons, as it turns out, are gentle creatives that love sweets, hoard books, and, most certainly, are real! I'm getting the word out to my kids!

Visually, this book is GORGEOUS! A Year in the Secret Garden is a treasure trove of activities, crafts, games, recipes and information all related to the classic children’s book, The Secret Garden, bringing to life this wonderful book to a new generation of readers. I cannot recommend this beautifully illustrated and detailed, information-packed book highly enough to parents, homeschoolers, teachers, and librarians. Ages 5+

What a beautiful book! The Waldorf Homeschool Handbook has given me much food for thought by reading it. I love it and even though we have already been homeschooling for almost 8 years now with children in highschool, it has been wonderfully refreshing and has encouraged me to relook at how we go about our homeschooling journey.
