We connect families and children to nature, wonder, and the magic of being through beautiful books

Audrey Press Welcomes Author/Illustrator Michael Welply

May 6, 2014 by Valarie Leave a Comment

We would like to welcome author/illustrator Michael Welply to the Audrey Press family!

Michael Welply

Michael is a world class illustrator who has illustrated over 80 books. Michael is not only familiar with working for many major publishing companies, he is the father of Roscoe Welply, a Audrey Press alum from Day One.

Michael was born in London in 1948 and moved to Winnipeg, Canada in 1950. In 1981 he moved with his family to central France, where he still lives. Having studied art first in Winnipeg and then in Paris, Michael began his illustrating career in 1977 and has worked for many publishers in Europe and the United States. He has illustrated over 50 books, ranging from historical work to fantasy and fairy tales. To view a full list of Michael’s books, go HERE.

What we are most excited about is that Michael is the illustrator for the upcoming book Dragons are Real {written by Valarie Budayr} to be released in the fall of 2014!  Michael took a break from his busy schedule to share some thoughts and details about his life.

“Over the years I have collaborated with publishers both in Europe and in North America. My artwork covers a wide range of subjects from detailed non-fiction illustration to juvenile and adult fiction, mythology, fantasy, science fiction and tales for young children,” Michael shared. “To date I have illustrated about 80 books, over 115 book covers and have produced work for numerous magazine covers and articles, as well as for many collectively illustrated books. I always enjoyed drawing and painting so illustration seemed a good direction to follow as it insured me an income. An average workday would be about 8 hours, sometimes 10, occasionally (when deadlines are approaching and I’m behind on the project!) I’ll work through the night. Usually if I have to do that, what I produce isn’t my best work!”

Michael continued by sharing a bit about his personal life. “Like most people I enjoy reading, going to the cinema or the theatre, watching tv , playing tennis, running, hiking,” He confirmed.  “I’m married, have 2 grown children and 3 grandchildren. No idea what they think of my “talents” but I love spending time with them.

Gorgeous descriptions of New Orleans paired with a brilliant take on vampire lore, all written with a truly authentic teen voice add up to one thing: Hannah Rials’s writing is breathing new life into the paranormal YA world.

I always suspected that certain picture books give dragons an undeserved bad rap. This delightful picture book clears up dangerous and misleading misconceptions about dragons. Dragons, as it turns out, are gentle creatives that love sweets, hoard books, and, most certainly, are real! I'm getting the word out to my kids!

Visually, this book is GORGEOUS! A Year in the Secret Garden is a treasure trove of activities, crafts, games, recipes and information all related to the classic children’s book, The Secret Garden, bringing to life this wonderful book to a new generation of readers. I cannot recommend this beautifully illustrated and detailed, information-packed book highly enough to parents, homeschoolers, teachers, and librarians. Ages 5+

What a beautiful book! The Waldorf Homeschool Handbook has given me much food for thought by reading it. I love it and even though we have already been homeschooling for almost 8 years now with children in highschool, it has been wonderfully refreshing and has encouraged me to relook at how we go about our homeschooling journey.
