Never Miss a Beat

A summer reading solution for reluctant readers

Yay summer! Bring on the sun, fun, and FREEDOM!

As adults, we can completely understand our youngster’s reluctance to do any sort of “school-y” things during the off-season; but we also have a responsibility to keep little minds sharp.

Not long ago, the AP blog shared some great info on offering up books that pique the interest of young readers during the summer, but we have another idea up our sleeve as well!

A summer reading solution for reluctant readers

We’ve added a whole new level of “learning is FUN” layer to summer reading with our new kidlit book-inspired activity ebook!

The ABCs of BookJumping: The Best of Jump Into a Book by Valarie Budayr and Rebecca Flansburg allows frustrated parents of reluctant readers to enjoy hand-picked book reviews and unique companion activities that will reignite your child’s love of reading and encourage screen-free family time.

What if you could \”live\” inside the pages of the children’s books your family reads? What if you could enjoy the same adventures as the characters?

Bookjumping is taking the solitary act of reading a book and transforming it into an event that can be shared with others.

It’s the process of pulling books off shelves and stories off pages.

It’s making books come ALIVE by  “jumping” inside the pages. Readers of this ebook will enjoy hand-picked book reviews and unique companion activities that will reignite your child’s love of reading and encourage screen-free family time.

Here’s a sneak peek at one of the many activities in the ebook that will please any Landlubber!

Pirate Wear

So many things come to mind when we think about pirates and what they wear.

Tri-corner hats worn on top of a tied headscarf, earrings, an eye patch, peg legs, and of course, the hook in place of a hand. So let’s get started since we want you to look the part in this pirate adventure.

Dagger and Sheath

We had so much fun making this. This is so simple to do, and it doesn’t hurt if one should get into a pirate duel.

Supplies:

  • Self-Adhesive Foam board. Two large sheets in any color you would like. If you use foam board without the peel and stick adhesive, use foam glue to hold each section together.

Download the sword and sheath pattern HERE. Trace the dagger/sword pattern 4 times on two foam board sheets. Cut out your pattern pieces.

Figure out how you want the color order of your dagger to go. Start with the bottom piece. On the next piece pull back the paper and stick it to the bottom piece.

Keep going like this until you get to the last piece. Peel the paper on this piece, and then peel the paper on the bottom of the dagger and stick the last piece to the bottom piece. Now you have a fun dagger to battle pirates with!

BUT WAIT…what will you put your knife in? All good pirates need a way to carry their knives and what better way to do that than with a sheath.

Sheath Supplies:

  • One piece of foam board, any color, without the self-adhesive.
  • Stitching needle
  • Sock yarn, or wax thread

Trace the sheath pattern twice onto the third sheet of foam board. Be sure to knot it at the very beginning and end.

So if this activity made your Swashbuckle hollar for MORE, rest assured there are more pirate-themed activities, crafts, and learning games inside this affordable ebook.

**The steps in greater detail, along with the patterns and diagrams for this craft project, can be found in the pages of the ebook.

What is a Book Jumper?

It’s more than just an “activity.”  Book-jumping is a way of life. It’s where we look at the story from the same perspective as the characters. Instead of the book “being magical”, we actually become the magic. -Valarie Budayr

It’s the process of taking the solitary act of reading a book and transforming it into an event to be shared with others. It’s the act of pulling books off shelves and stories off pages. It’s the act of making kids\’ books come ALIVE and living inside the pages. It’s creating places of magic and wonder, without ever leaving the house.
